November & December 2010 News

HHERR has re-opened its doors.  With all the horses in need, we had to find a way and we did.  We will be taking in horses on a very limited basis until next summer.  This will ensure they will get the best of care for the time they are with us during winter until a new home can be found and they are adopted.

We are also in the planning stage of a new facility.  We hope to have ground breaking spring 2011 to open the new doors before winter 2011.  The new facility will have a heated barn, stalls with individual paddocks/runs, and eventually both and indoor and outdoor riding arena.   This new facility will not only allow us to take in more rehab and rescue horses, but will give us the opportunity to hold different fundraising events such as a riding clinic, or a fun show.

Please keep checking this page for updates regarding the planning and building of our new rehab and rescue facility.

We hope everyone is enjoying the weather with winter fast approaching.  We also hope that everyone and their horses are doing well in the cold weather and precautions are being taken.  We want to remind everyone of a few important winter tips for their horses:

  1. Remember to always check automatic waterers and other water tanks to make sure they are running and not frozen.  Make sure your horse always has access to fresh water as they can become very dehydrated in the cold.
  2. Keep an eye on your horse’s weight.  A winter coat can be very deceiving on a horse that is losing weight or one that is thin.   Go out and feel your horse once a week to see if you can feel ribs or bony prominences through their winter coat.  On the same note, make sure your horse always has plenty of forage to eat as this is what keeps them warm in the winter.
  3. Keep blankets handy for those horses that do not fair well in the winter, harsh winter storms, or blizzards.
  4. Make sure that you keep up with trimming, deworming, and vaccination schedules.  Just because the weather changed does not mean your horse still does not need these things.
  5. If you are going to be traveling, make sure your trailer is winterized and ready for travel, as well as having all the essential needs in the trailer for your horse(s).
